The Great Gatsby First Post

Fitzgerald emphasizes Jordan’s carelessness and basic dishonesty. An incident where Jordan was careless and dishonest was when she borrowed a friend’s car and left the top down in the rain. “When we were on a house-party together up in Warwick, she left a borrowed car out in the rain with the top down, and the lied about it…” (pg 57). Furthermore, she states that, “I hate careless people.” However the reality is she is a “rotten driver” herself. Showing the readers that Jordan is a constant liar. In Nick’s opinion he states, “She was incurably dishonest.” This reveals that Nick is nonjudgmental towards those who lie. “Dishonesty in a women is a thing you never blame deeply.”

Fourth Post Assignment

A character that reminds me of Huck Finn is Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird. Huck an adolescent who questions his own beliefs about equality due to societies' belief. Likewise Scout questions her father, Atticus on societies belief. She questioned why the community would accuse a man when the court clearly knew he was innocent and unable to commit the crime. For they are both fighting the view of society and themselves. In addition they are both youthful characters who live in a society where racism is present in every aspect of their life. Nevertheless they both fight for the equality and even with societies' disagreement. In addition they both come to a realization that although people are different they should be respect. In conclusion 1) Huck and Scout are youthful characters who live in a society where racism runs rampant, 2) have antagonists that effect/question their views, and 3) both come to realize about racism (Huck - his life is equal to a black man) (Scout - although people appear different the reality is they aren't and shouldn't be treated differently).

Third Posting Assignment

In chapter 22 Sherburn states that no will be able to lynch him in the day time. Likewise he states that the everyone in the mob are coward because they have more than enough people needed to lynch this one single person. That they are only half of a person. In addition all the members of the mob think as a collective group rather then individually. Twain ridicules the societies cowardice. For society won’t go against a person or the conformist ideas because there is no one to support them. Furthermore they fear on what others in the society will say. Where as the human weakness in society is how easily the acceptance of others’ ideas are. Rather than standing out and speaking there minds they will easily agree and act upon it.

I think in the upcoming chapters Sherburn will bring more trouble for Huck and Jim. Maybe they will turn in Jim just to receive the money. But what will this mean for Huck?

Second Posting Assignment

Throughout the chapters Huck is faced with dilemmas in which he is forced to lie and other times he speaks of the truth. In chapter VII Huck lies to everyone that cares for him by faking his own death. In addition to taking anything of value out of the cabin and making it seem as though the cabin was robbed . In this case Huck chooses to be dishonest because he knows that if he was to leave those cared would go looking for him or nevertheless be worried about what had happened to him. His fake death would one day give them solace. This shows that Huck is caring. Furthermore shows that although he lacks intellectual intelligence he has more knowledge about everyday life. In chapter XIII Huck lies to the watchman and tells him that his family is in need of help. When in reality he is really he is helping the robbers get off the boat. However in his misleading act of kindness, his plan goes awry when he arrives to find the robbers dead. Based on this event shows that Huck feels remorse from his actions. In addition it shows that Huck is applying the things he learned with Miss Watson and Widow Douglas had taught him. However Huck does occasionally tell the truth. During his conversion with Jim, he promises that he won’t tell anyone why Jim had left. However in Huck’s society it was severely frowned upon and he was taught to bring forth those who had runaway. In the end Huck promised to keep his promise. This shows that Huck is a man of his word. Huck also gives his money to Judge Thatcher. Therefore his alcoholic father cannot get a hold of it and waste it. This shows that Huck is smart because he knows that his father will waste it all on alcoholic beverages. Huck chooses to tell the truth sometimes and tell lies other times because he feels guilty and is only trying to help not only himself but others also. Throughout the chapters, the readers have seen Huck grow up. He has matured.

First Posting Assignment

Based on the evidence from the reading Huck for the most part is like the typical kid. For he is easily influenced by those around him, especially Tom Sawyer. “Then Tom said he hadn’t got candles enough, and he would slip in the kitchen and get some more. I didn’t want him to try. I said Jim might wake up and come. But Tom wanted to resk it; so we slid in there and got three candles, and Tom laid five cents on the table for pay” (Pg 4). In addition Huck is curious about his surroundings such as smoking. “Pretty soon I wanted to smoke, and asked the widow to let me” (Pg 2). Despite these qualities some of Huck’s actions aren’t typical for a child his age. “I was most ready to cry; but all at once I thought of a way, and so I offered them Miss Watson - they could kill her” (Pg 6).

Based on the actions of other characters, it appears that Huck is uneducated. “Her sister, Miss Watson, a tolerable slim old maid, with goggles on, had just come to live with her, and took a set at me now, with a spelling book” (Pg 2).
Based on Huck’s thoughts, it shows that he is a lonely child. “Then I set down in a chair by the window and tried to think of something cheerful, but it warn’t no use. I felt so lonesome I most wished I was dead ” (Pg 2).
Based on Huck’s actions, it reveals that he is caring. “We played robber now and then about a month, and then I resigned. All the boys did. We hadn’t robbed nobody, we hadn’t killed any people, but only just pretended” (Pg 9).
Based on Huck’s appearance, it shows that he is poor. “I got into my old rags, and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied” (Pg 1).

Huck’s actions do make him like the typical pre-pubescent boy. For he enters a club with rules. “Now we’ll start this band of robber and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang. Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood” (Pg 5). In addition, he cannot keep his clothing clean while out playing.“Well. I got a good going-over in the morning , from old Miss Watson, on account of my clothes; but the widow she didn’t scold me, but only cleaned off the grease and clay and looked so sorry that I thought I would behave a while if I could” (Pg 8).

Huck seems more mature for his age, for he is able to live on his own. “The Widow Douglas, she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn’t stand it no longer, I lit out” (Pg 1).

Huck’s jokes on others make him seem less mature for his age.“We used to hop out of the woods and go charging down on hog-drivers and women in carts taking garden stuff to market, but we never hived any of them” (Pg 9).
